St. Jude Patient of the Month: Swayzie
Swayzie's Story
As far as Swayzie is concerned, her blood got sick on her birthday, and now St. Jude is curing her blood.
When Swayzie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July 2021, right after her 5th birthday party, her family sought a referral to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® because, as her mom said, “I wanted someone that had experience.” When St. Jude opened in 1962, childhood cancer was largely considered incurable. Since then, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from 20% to more than 80%. For St. Jude patients with Swayzie’s disease, survival rates are 94%.
“We just felt at ease when we got here,” said her mom.
At St. Jude, Swayzie is undergoing chemotherapy treatment that will last 2-1/2 years. “I can’t imagine going through it myself, and it’s even harder to watch your child go through that,” said her mom. But Swayzie remains undaunted. “She is out of her shell for sure. She just loves to be the center of attention.” She enjoys interacting with her care team and spending down time in the Family Commons on the second floor of the St. Jude Patient Care Center, particularly the art room because she loves crafts and the music room because she loves to sing. “She is still able to have a childhood.”
