Ductless Mini-Split Systems
Heating and cooling systems without ductwork.
Ductless mini-split heating/cooling systems can be a good choice for room additions where extending or installing distribution ductwork is not feasible, and for older homes without air ducts.
A ductless system operates like a conventional heat pump. The difference is that instead of a single indoor unit distributing heated or cooled air through ductwork, a ductless system has multiple small units serving individual rooms or zones (the term "mini" refers to the small indoor air-handling units).
Advantages of ductless mini-split systems. The main advantages of mini-splits are their small size and flexibility for heating and cooling individual rooms. Many models can have up to four indoor air-handling units connected to one outdoor unit. Each zone has its own thermostat, so you can condition each space individually, saving energy and money.
Efficient heating and air conditioning. Since mini-splits have no ducts, they avoid the energy losses associated with ductwork of central forced air systems—which can be as high as 30%, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic.
The biggest disadvantage of mini-splits is their cost, which can be about 30% more than central systems and may cost twice as much as window units of similar capacity.
But for certain applications, a ductless mini-split heating/cooling system may be your best option—especially if you’re retrofitting a non-ducted home or space.
